The Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7365 on our site is the original Alpha tow bar just like what you have which is why the latching system doesn't look any different. I reached out to Blue Ox and my contact said that the newer Alpha tow bar (currently not available on their site either as of November 2019) uses a latching system similar to the Avail Tow Bar # BX7420 so there is a significant difference in the design. Quality-wise, both tow bars are equivalent. Both have the same 6,000 lb capacity, but the StowMaster # RM-501 is a car-mount and the Falcon 2 # RM-520 is a motorhome mount.

There are some fairly significant differences between the original Blue Ox Alpha and the # BX7380 Alpha 2 tow bar. The Alpha 2 has non-binding latches, while the original Alpha did not, so releasing the latches is much easier on un-even ground. The difference between the Roadmaster XL Base Plates # 1541-1 and the MX base plates # 1541-5 is tow bar compatibility. The difference between coiled safety cables like # RM-643, and straight cables like # RM-645, other than the design, is the applications for which you would use each. For example, some tow bars, like # RM-422, have built in safety cable channels which would ideally work with straight cables. The channels hold the coils up so that they do not get caught on anything or drag on the ground. So for a tow bar with built-in channels, I recommend straight cables.

I'm not quite sure where you found a difference of $500 dollars between the (discontinued) Blue Ox Aventa LX Tow Bar BX7445 and the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar # BX7420 but my guess would be that since the Aventa LX has been discontinued that it is at a much lower price-point. It was a good tow bar but definitely not priced that much lower than the Avail.
